Hawaiian Cruise Page 3

After 5 days at sea, it was time to see land again. Everyone ran for their cellphones to touch base
with home or work. Bob Shane got a visit from the hotel manager...uh oh, what's up? Seems that
the harbormaster at Hilo, Ian Birnie, is an old classmate of Bob's. He and Cyrus Faryar, also an
old classmate (and member of the Modern Folk Quartet) got together with the Mayor of Hilo..........

The end result was that the Mayor of Hilo proclaimed January 10th & Janurary 14th Bob Shane
and Kingston Trio day in Hilo and Kona, Hawaii. Those of us without early tours gathered in the
Crow's Nest lounge for the celebration. A proclamation was read and everyone had a great time.

Later on we tried to pull our weight around town by saying it was "Bob Shane day," but no one
seemed to care. Oh well, no free drinks just because it was Bob Shane and Kingston Trio day.

Now it was time to go out and about and explore Hilo. Most headed
to Volcano National Park. The volcano was majestic & awe-inspiring.

After some wonderful sightseeing in Volcano National Park, it was time to get some
lunch. A few of us headed to the Volcano Country Club where we had a delicious
meal in lovely surroundings. Bob got to catch up with friend Cyrus, which was great.

Lunch At Volcano Country Club

We're Stuffed!

After lunch we headed back to the ship, except for Buffy Stewart who had plans
to spend the the day hanging out with her two young nieces who live in Hilo.

Oh No! They had a flat tire and were stranded by the side of the road, and had
no spare! Thank God for cell phones...Henry and Cyrus to the rescue! It was
rainy and messy but everyone ended up OK. The kids will get a spare for sure!!

Bald Tires And No Spare...Remember When You Were 18?

After the tire was replaced, Henry, Cyrus and Buffy went to a local watering
hole and hooked up with Chip Douglas and his son. Chip had auditioned
for the Kingston Trio when Dave Guard left in 1961, but he was too young.

He went on to become producer of the Monkees and also a member of The
Modern Folk Quartet. Chip is a great guy and has remained a life-long friend.

We had a restful night (except for those jammers!) and docked in Honolulu bright and early.
The misty morning created a fairylike feel to the harbor as we docked at the Aloha Tower.

Speaking of far-out art, Hawaii had much old-style and antique poster art. Here's our favorites...

There are lots of forms of art, and as long as we're on the subject we must mention the
towel animals that showed up on our beds every night. They're an art form in themselves!

Some folks went to the north shore of Oahu and chilled out on the beach, some toured Pearl
Harbor, others stayed in Honolulu and did some shopping. Finally our 2 days in Oahu came
to an end and we headed back to the ship and said Aloha to the beautiful island of Oahu.
