Hawaiian Cruise Page 4

Now it was on to Maui, truly an island of enchantment. Maui is much more laid-back than
Oahu; quieter, without so much hustle & bustle and building. You can drive around Maui
and see long stretches of quiet beaches right next to the road. It immediately relaxes you.

There's only one major road there, and it winds around the island, sometimes getting very
narrow and precarious. But f you're going to Hawaii to relax then Maui is the island to do it.
The landscape is dominated by Haleakala, the volcano that created it. Haleakala rises
up majestically and disappears into the clouds. Here's a view looking down into the crater:

Haleakala Crater

Driving up to the top of Haleakala takes a lot of guts. The road is almost too narrow for a
car, with hairpin curves and sheer drops right next to the road. The top is truly a spiritual
experience, but the drive up is not for the faint-hearted. You see a lot of these road signs.

Narrow Road To Haleakala

The Maui sky is exceptionally beautiul & the Zaandam looked awesome in silhouette.
We had to dock out in the harbor and take "tender" boats to and from the dock. On our
return we were struck by the gorgeous sky at sunset & the Zaandam etched against it.

Bob Shane took family & a few friends up the volcano to the small town of Makawao.
His cousin Johnny Baldwin lives on an estate there, and Joe Gannon, the Trio's first
road manager, owns a fantastic restaurant there called the Hali'imaile General Store.

Joe was also an original member of The Calypsonians, along with Nick Reynolds,
Dave Guard & Barbara Bogue. After a few months, Joe and Barbara left the group,
Nick & Dave called Bob, and the rest, as they say, is history - The Kingston Trio was
born. Joe's wife Bev is a world-renowned chef, and she did us the honor of preparing
lunch. The Hali'imaile is a cool restaurant with lots of great art and an old-timey feel.

Seeing Bev and Joe was great and lunch was a culinary experience, but it was time to go
up the road to cousin Johnny's. It was a beautiful sunny day and we all felt great. On the
way out we stopped to admire the Hali'imaile & some of the wonderful art. It's all for sale!

Johnny had invited a lot of friends over and had a jam set up for us. Johnny is a picker
too & also a member of The Turpentine Cats, a folk group that performs around Maui.

He has a huge estate that looks down from Haleakala into Lahaina bay. We spread
out & enjoyed the day. Kids played, grownups sat on the grass, pickers picked and
wine and beer flowed. No one had to drive those narrow Maui highways to get back!

On The Bus...It's Time To Get Back To The Zaandam

Ann And Neil On The Bus

A good time was had by all; it was a great day...well, except for Elisabeth Dougherty,
who fell & broke her leg! She ended up with a cast & a challenge (more on that later).

Our last stop in Hawaii was Kona, just for an afternoon. It was very hot and touristy.
Again we had to take tender boats to get to shore. We shopped around a bit but didn't
stay. Some folks had a great time visiting the winter palace. It's a beautiful place to see.

We had to rush back to the boat because it was group picture day on the bow of the
ship. They don't let you up there very often, but they made an exception for us that day.

Our UK Contingent

The folks we have so affectionately dubbed our "UK contigent" are, from left to right,
Bob and Jackie Richards (Wales), Richard and Margaret Sneddon (Scotland), and
David & Brenda Scragg (England). They were also on the Kingston Trio Alaska cruise
and deserve a very special mention. We certainly hope they keep on showing up!!!!

Leaving Kona we were treated to a slow cruise by the erupting volcano. We watched
spellbound and enraptured by the fiery lava and steam hissing up from the ocean.

Now we were back at sea for 5 days (with a short 4 hour stop in Ensenada, Mexico),
and we still had plenty to do. We discovered that you don't have to limit yourself to
one dessert at dinner, you can have five! How did we miss that? We had to catch up!

The dinners were loads of fun. The Zaandam sure does a lot to keep you occupied,
including different theme nights and lots of hullabaloo. We thought the best part was
being able to have dinner with our friends each night, which we cherished. We must
have all gained at least 5 pounds on this cruise, though! Gotta watch out for that soon.
