The Kingston Trio: Rick Dougherty

The Kingston Trio: Rick Dougherty

Largo, FL December 2006

The venue in Largo was small, only 400 seats, but was completely sold out, including the 50 extra folding chairs that had been set up on the sides.

We had an opening act this night; a guitarist named Sal Ditroia who had played on Paul Simon’s recordings. He was a very nice guy and had an incredible custom guitar.

There were also some friends who had stopped in backstage to see George.
Sherry Austin and her friend were there making sure George felt welcome.

Jak Kelly, a Nashville songwriter, and an old friend of George's, Ric Hafer,
dropped in backstage.

Bruce Blazej of the Chilly Winds was there as well and brought his Martin 4- string and 12-string for us to see. If you can believe it, he built the case for the 4-string himself.

Even for their small size, when we took the stage the audience responded enthusiastically, which was good for us since we had been told that a couple of booking agents were in the house.

The show was as strong as ever, and as we left the manager talked to us about doing more gigs for them, including a possible Christmas show. An invitation to come back is always the best compliment.
